Bach’s Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring is one of my favorite musical compositions. I created this arrangement because the editions I found were either highly simplified—lacking the work’s depth and harmonic sophistication—or precise transcriptions of the original (which is scored for a large ensemble)—resulting in a work that, in my opinion, is cumbersome and unsuccessful as a piano piece. With this arrangement I have striven to strike a middle ground, honoring Bach’s exquisite music but making a few minor adjustments and strategic cuts that I believe help it succeed as as piano piece.
