With Toccata (2024), I wanted to create a driving, lively work, but one that also has a lyrical aspect offsetting the more aggressive writing. It begins with a brief introduction that is chordal and lyrical, and this element resurfaces mid-way through the piece, giving pause to the music before it ramps up to a full-bodied, virtuosic conclusion. Propelled by a meter of 7, the character of primary themes draws from jazz and blues.
